Blogger Botches Again?!?

blogger_comment2.jpgJust tried to leave a comment on a Blogger blog and, guess what? They’ve once again STOPPED letting non-Blogger accounts log in to comments, like I had reported last month. In fact, you can’t even log in anonymously like you used to be able to. Check out the picture to the right so you can see what I mean.

Wow. I’m speechless. It’s beginning to look like Google doesn’t know what the heck they’re doing in the blogosphere. Comments, anyone?

  1. That is odd…

Though truthfully somebody just commented on one of my posts about 30 minutes ago and the OpenID worked for them.

  2. Yeah and it just worked for me on a different Blogger blog. I wonder what’s going on? Is that a setting you can toggle on your dashboard? E.g., “only accept comments from people with a Blogger account”?

  3. Yes indeed. The author can limit commenting to blogger-only.

  4. Well, shut my mouth and call me Nelly. I feel silly! But I think I’ll leave this post up to show that I can be humble, as well. ;)

  5. It’s kinda silly to have the option in the first place I think… not exactly helping any bloggers who do that is it!

  6. Well, since the option is there, it probably should lead every blogger to question their motivations for blogging. If it’s about engaging in conversations with the rest of the blogosphere, this setting is clearly counter-productive, but if you’re only interested in publishing your thoughts, limiting or even removing comments may be the right thing.
Of course, that one being the default setting, the newbie blogger may just not notice or keep it this way because he believes this to be the most secure setting, not realizing he’s shutting out a large part of his audience.

  7. I posted a comment on a relatively new Blogger blog yesterday, and added a request that the author open up OpenID. It is on the Blogger dashboard, but it’s not enabled by default. So, it may take a bit for a new blogger to figure it out.

I figure it’s in my/our best interest to at least make the request. :)

So before we blame the blogger (hey, we were all noobs once, right?), I’ll continue to lay the blame at Blogger’s feet. I like the concept of OpenID, but as I’ve commented before, it doesn’t work well for self-hosted bloggers (such as myself).

(To explain: My OpenID is linked to kestrelsaerie.wordpress.com. However, I moved my blog from there within a week of starting on WP. There is a solution for self-hosting your own OpenID, but it’s rather convoluted.)

WordPress’ practice, where my name at the top of this comment is linked directly to my blob, is simply better.
