Orb of Deception

Why the heck does this item sell for up to 800G???
I got this drop from a random chest in Winterspring and my entire guild congratulated me on now being able to buy my epic mount (eventually). I was flabbergasted. I don’t get it. Can someone ’splain me why this item is so expensive?

Think PvP.
How about strolling into Orgrimmar when you’re really a Night Elf, but look like a troll? (Or into Iron Forge as a dorf, when you’re really a cow.)
At least, I think that’s it…
Pretty sure I had one of those drop for me once, but I sure didn’t get 800 (or 80) gold for it! (I probably gave it to a guildie.)
@Kestrel: Well, I thought that too, but upon further research, NPCs don’t know you’re disguised and will attack you anyway. It only works on player characters. So, said Nelf would be dead before he reached the Org bank.
PvP. It actually works very well. I’ve been fooled by it more than once.
After coming up with the gold to buy lessons to ride an epic mount, flying mount, and epic flying mount, and you’re still playing and farming for gold faster than ever, 800g is pricey, what else are you going to spend money on, and that’s just a weeks worth of dailys and it’s a fun little toy.
You know those trading card game tabards, “Tabard of the Frost” and such? You buy them with “UDE” points. 2,000 points get you that tabard. (25,000 get you an Ogre costume.) You got 10 UDE points on one UDE Point Card, which you get in the Warcraft Trading Card Game Booster pack. 20 Booster packs will net you the 2,000 UDE points you need, or $78 without tax. That tabard cost the player some 80 real life dollars. (I guess if you play the game 20 booster packs sounds about right to have a deck?)
Look at the “competitive” level 19 pvp Twink. Can you imagine the untold hours invested in that character? The gold that’s been dumped on that character and his gear?
I would never put a limit on what I think a player is willing to fork out in terms of his own time (Warlord pvp rank, anyone?) or money (e-bay characters with the twin-blades of Azzinoth for a rumored $10K), because I’d be underestimating people. There is no limit on time folks will invest, money they’ll spend, on some basically inconsequential things. (I have two level 70 characters that can vaguely attest to that fact.)
800g? That’s nothing for enough folks to make it quite the windfall for you.
Grats!
Ummm…brain cramp? I knew that about NPCs. Honest, I really did. Kinda why I don’t have my Orb…since I don’t PvP, and have better sense than to visit Orgrimmar for ANY reason (not even to gab with Ratshag).
But I at least remembered that PVPers like it.
For many players (okay, yes, including me), collecting things thats set them apart from other characters is part of the fun! I know that I’m VERY proud of the fishing chair that I got for my birthday. To be honest, I’ve have plopped down the money to buy an Orb of Deception by now if not for the fact that Night Elves turn into Undead.
Congratulations on your acquisition!
I have that item in bank as well. I got it 2 years ago, in Scholomance, drop from a whelp. Tbh i don`t think I used it more than 10 times, it transforms me into an ugly orc female. It`s been rotting in the bank ever since. I wouldn`t pay 800g for that item.
I had a friend who used one as an RP wedding gift for his rogue bride-to-be. Most appropriate, I thought, altho it turned out to be a harbinger of things that came to pass between them. Ah, does anyone RP like that anymore, I wonder?
I also have (had) one, and I think it too was a gift from an admirer, along with a 350 gp Lovely Black Dress. *chuckle*

Dude, I’m SOOO going to AH this little orbie!
@Kinless: Very insightful stuff. I hadn’t thought about the “expendable income” part of the WoW economy. I mean, my idea of a large bank account is having over 140G!
Man, I got suckered into buying some of those trading cards and after doing the Mathifications (hee hee, I love that term, Ratty!), just as you did, I said, No freakin way!
@Phaelia: That makes so much sense! Yes there are a lot of vanity items, pets, gear, etc. out there and I hadn’t thought of that. I really like your fishing chair. It would make me feel like I’m on vacation!
@LadyPao: RP wedding gift??!? Seriously? Wow. You mean they got married in-game as part of the RP? Or they got married in RL? From what I’ve seen, RP on my server is making a comeback after being pretty much unseen by me in the entire time I’ve been online. Lovely Black Dress?? Link, please!
Yep. RP wedding gift - in game wedding. He was married in RL, 36 y.o., she was single in RL, 23 y.o. I know I know, I don’t get it either, yet I did some wild RP things way back when, so I need to stay away from the Judgemental Bandwagon. LOL.
I can’t link the dress from work, but once you get back online (!!), scan the AH for one, and try it on in the Dressing Room. As a Nelf, I was pretty damn hawt, I’ll tell you. There’s all sorts of hawtnasty outfits, besides the obvious Black Mageweave set - you just need to spend a little time in the dressing room trying things out!

Coolest item ever in this game.
Got it on my druid, wait to buy it for my Shaman and my Warrior.
