Decision: Resto respec ahead

Thanks for the great comments on my last post, everyone! I had been leaning towards resto anyway but you guys helped me feel more confident in the decision. I’ve already mapped out my talent tree and have been spying for new equipment. I feel like I’ll miss my crits and my Elemental Mastery. It will be an interesting adjustment to no longer be the lightning bug. Still, I’ve had experience healing at lower levels and it was fun so I have more confidence in my ability there than to play Enhancement anyway. You can check out my gear on the Armory and if you have any recommendations, let me know. I tried Be.Imba but it keeps giving me an armory error message.) The tricky part is that I haven’t done an instance since… wow, since Blackrock Depths (and I didn’t even finish that one). So I have no idea how I’d get the drop-type gear. Actually, I have no idea how I’d get ANY gear that you can’t purchase. Anyway, just keeping you up to date.

Updated: The Be.Imba report finally came through. It looks like at least I was right-on for leveling and grinding. It also looks like I do need some gear improvements. Okay, a LOT of gear improvements.

  1. I’d suggest maybe some pieces of the reputation blues. They’re not really the best for each slot but they are a decent start.

  2. It’s not a bad first go at a resto spec. However, I have a few recommendations. I will try to explain why I feel how I do – and take them how you like. :)

Alright, first off – get rid of the 5 points in Ancestral Knowledge. Yes, I know – it sounds logical to get more mana. And you are correct, but not at the cost of 5 talent points. 5% extra mana, that’s 500 more mana *if you already have 10k mana*. Which I am quite sure you do not with the gear you state you have. I can’t check on the armory, because you are in Elemental gear atm ;) Quick tanget – I recommend one of the profiler sites out there. Warcrafter.net is a decent one, and magelo.com just started doing WoW profiles – though you have to run a addon/program for magelo.

Anyhow, back to the talents! Take those 5 points from Ancestral Knowledge and put them in Ancestral healing. Dump the other 2 into Tidal Mastery.

I personally don’t like Improved Reincarnation. Mainly because I feel that those 2 points can be put to better use. Ask yourself, do you see your raid wiping a lot? Are you the only shaman? Is it that much harder to just have everyone run back? I would say stick those 2 points into Tidal Mastery to help complement Ancestral Healing.

Remember, you can spam Rank 1 HW over and over to get some crits off to proc Ancestral Healing (and build up Healing Way). Also, depending on what you are raiding (just hitting Kara, right?) you will be turning into a Chain Heal-bot. Spreading around extra armor to 1-3 people at a time is quite sexy :)

Posting again in a few with some gear recommendations.

  3. Hmm, I had a new comment typed out and went to post and got a blank white page :(

    Anyhow, quick summary:
you need 1000 +heal and around 100mp5 (while casting), 5k health and 7k mana before stepping foot in Kara. Especially since it looks like your guild hasn’t flirted with Kara yet, at least according to wowjutsu.com – if you have several people in the raid who are already decently geared from kara, you could probably scrape by with less.

I did not include pvp/arena gear nor gear that was BoP for professions you do not have (Engineering, leatherworking, etc)

Maybe it’s just me, but I find myself wishing sometimes I’d gone Elemental for end-game, because melee is just a bitch. You can work your ass off for an entire encounter, twisting totems, running from add to add, and then die because some fool in the raid runs into you with a debuff or some healer is asleep at the wheel. You can do everything perfectly and still get knocked out of the fight, and you’re constantly worried about positioning and splash damage.

I’ve raided Enhancement pretty much my entire time at end-game, mostly because my guild needs me in the melee group, but for two weeks I tried Elemental and it was so much more relaxing and straightforward. Don’t get me wrong, I wish it consisted of more than casting LB incessantly, but then again most casters just spam one spell. But still…IMO it’s way easier to be ranged than melee.
